HOW TO MAKE CHANA DAL KHICHDI
Khichdi is a dish made with lentils and rice, can also be made using millet - Khichdi is basically a salty version of porridge. You can use any dal or grain to make this dish. You can make khichdi with Dalia, rice, brown rice, millet, etc and easily get ready in under 20 minutes.
I usually like eating it in lunch with yogurt, or achaar, and also pair great with Aloo Rasedar. I usually make Aloo Rasedar in good quantity and use leftover with this khichdi.
MAKING KHICHDI WITH CHANA DAL
Chana Dal - Chana Dal is a bit hard to cook and takes a little more time to cook than easy to make Split Yellow Lentils. I first soak it in water for 10-15 minutes, before making this recipe.
Then I add soaked lentils and rice with some whole spices and pressure cook in Instant Pot. Even though this is easy to make the recipe, but the taste of Chana Dal/ Split Chickpea Lentils makes this khichdi so special.
WHAT CAN YOU ADD IN CHANA DAL KHICHDI
Ingredients that I use:
- Rice
- Lentils
- Whole Spices
- Bay Leaf
- Indian Spices
Chana Dal Khichdi is a very simple recipe so you don't want to add a lot of spices. The main flavor comes from the lentils. Apart from the spices, you can definitely add some veggies to make it healthier and elevate the flavor of khichdi. You can dd carrots, peas, green beans, potatoes, cauliflower, etc just before pressure cooking.
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1 - RINSE THE LENTILS: The first step is to rinse the lentils and soak for 15-20 minutes. But if in hurry you can also skip the step, but if you have time then I would recommend soaking the lentils.
STEP 2 - SAUTE THE WHOLE SPICES: You can also add whole spices later but sauteing them makes the khichdi more aromatic & flavorful.
STEP 3 - ADD RICE & LENTILS: Next add rinsed & soaked lentils & rice in the pressure cooker along with water. You can adjust the quantity as needed. You can also add some veggies (if you want) to make khichdi healthier.
STEP 4 - PRESSURE COOK: Close the lid and pressure cook for 4 minutes in the Instant Pot and let the pressure release naturally.
STEP 5 - ADJUST & SERVE: Once pressure is release fluff it with a spoon. Adjust the seasoning (if needed). Serve with yogurt or Indian pickle or green chutney.
