Chana Dal/ Split Chickpeas Lentil Khichdi

Chana Dal Khichdi is a one-pot meal made with rice and chana dal (split chickpeas) along with some spices. You can easily make this recipe in Instant Pot. Chana Dal Khichdi pair nicely with Yogurt/Raita, Achaar (Indian Pickle), or with Aloo Rasedar.

Ingredients
  

  • ½ Cup Channa Dal/ Split Chickpea Lentil soaked & rinsed for 10- 15 minutes
  • 1 Cup Rice soaked & rinsed for 10- 15 minutes
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger-Garlic Paste
  • 2 tablespoon Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 2 ½ Cups Water
  • Salt

Instructions
 

HOW TO MAKE CHANA DAL KHICHDI IN INSTANT POT:

  • Add Oil to the inner pot of Instant Pot, and press Saute. When the oil is hot add all the Whole Spices, and fry for 1-2 minutes and keep stirring.
  • Add Cumin Seeds, and when they change color and add Ginger-Garlic Paste and fry for 1-2 minutes, till the raw smell disappears.
  • Add soaked rice and lentil to the pot and mix evenly. Add salt & water to the pot, and close lid.
  • With vent the sealing position, pressure cook for 4 minutes. When timer beeps do NPR (No Pressure Release) for 10 minutes and then Quick Release (meaning turn vent to the venting position).
  • When pressure is released and the valve goes down the open lid. Lightly fluff the rice using a fork until everything is combined well and serve with Yogurt or any Indian Pickle.

HOW TO MAKE CHANA DAL KHICHDI ON STOVE-TOP:

  • In a stove-top pressure cooker add oil at medium heat. When the oil is hot add all the Whole Spices, and fry for 1-2 minutes and keep stirring.
  • Add Cumin Seeds, and when they change color and add Ginger-Garlic Paste and fry for 1-2 minutes, till the raw smell disappears.
  • Add soaked rice and lentil to the pot and mix evenly. Add salt & water to the pot, and close lid. Pressure cooker for 3 whistles at medium heat and let pressure release naturally.
  • When pressure is released then open the lid. Lightly fluff the rice using a fork until everything is combined well and serve with Yogurt or any Indian Pickle.

Notes

If you like you can also add all the whole spices in a muslin cloth and tie a knot, and add it in the Instant Pot.
Channa Dal can easily be cooked with rice in Instant Pot in 4 minutes. No need to increase the time, as when cooked alone Channa Dal takes 15 minutes.
Pairs great with Yogurt/Raita, Achaar (Indian Pickles), or even Aloo Rasedar.
