BREAD BOWL

Homemade Bread Bowls (or Soup Bowls) are perfect for thick soup or chili. They are crisp from the outside with a soft interior from inside. If you have your own homemade Bread Bowl, it adds to the fun of eating delicious hot soup with your family.

The Bread Bowls can be made with just a handful of ingredients that you can easily find at home. And with Instant Pot, making bread of any kind is so much easier. I have made many pieces of bread using the yogurt function of Instant Pot, and each time I get thrilled by the way they puff.

WHY SOUP BOWLS

Homemade Bread Bowl (or Soup Bowls) makes the soup a dish-less meal. You can just serve the soup in a bread bowl and hence you don't have to wash any dishes. It is also one of my favorite Fall meals - creamy soup in the soup bowl.

Though I made this Soup Bowl for Broccoli Cheddar Soup, I enjoy all the soups with this bread. It is also, I think, the easiest one to make with minimal ingredients.

BREAD BOWL INGREDIENTS

  • FLOUR: You can make with any flour but I like making with bread flour. I have also made using whole wheat flour and the bread turned out great.
  • SUGAR: Earlier, sugar was added to make yeast more active. Now we use active yeast. But adding sugar is still recommended as it helps in making bread in texture.
  • SALT: A little bit is added to balance the flavor and for taste too.
  • YEAST: Yeast is added to make bread puff. For making bread, you always need yeast and sometimes I also use yogurt in some recipes.
  • WATER: Always use warm water while making the bread. Adding warm water helps in raising the yeast faster as compared to cold water.
  • OIL: Oil is added so that nothing sticks at the bottom.

Although I have made Bread Bowl using Instant Pot, you can also make it by putting the bread in a warm place for 1-2 hours and poking it every 15 minutes. It usually takes 1 hour for bread to puff. But if the weather is not warm, then it may take 2 hours too for bread to puff.

STEP 1 - ACTIVATE YEAST: First, add yeast in warm water and let it rest for 5- 10 minutes. When it's foamy and bubbly, then I add it with rest of the ingredients in a Stand Mixer. And mix all the ingredients together at medium setting until everything is combined and starts to form like a dough.

STEP 2 - PROOF THE DOUGH: Then add oil in the inner pot of Instant pot, spread the oil all around. Add dough in the pot and using the Yogurt setting, leave it for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes the dough should be doubled in size.

Once mixed, add water little at a time till everything is combined and the dough is no longer sticky. (You may not need all the water, add little quantity at a time till everything is combined well)

  • INSTANT POT: Add oil in the inner pot of the Instant Pot and transfer dough in it. Put a glass lid or plate to cover the pot. Start the yogurt setting and set the timer for 30 minutes till 1 hour, and after every 15 minutes poke the dough with your fist.
STOVE-TOP: Place the dough in a bowl and cover with a place. Store it in the warm place for 1-2 hours until it gets doubled in size.
  • After 30 minutes, when times beeps take the dough out and knead it one more time.
  • Divide dough into 6 equal parts and roll them into a ball. Add oil in the oven-safe tray and dust with flour. Now assemble the prepared dough balls on the oven-safe tray.
  • Cover the prepared dough balls with a damp cloth and let them rest for 20-30 minutes. Preheat oven at 400°F and brush some milk on the prepared balls using pastry brush.
  • Keep a bowl full of water at the bottom rack in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees.
  • Once the bread is ready and cooled, gently carve it from the top to create a hollow space within it. Don't carve too much or the bread will break. Serve with a soup of your choice and enjoy!

Notes

Yeast: Before making the bread, always check yeast expiry. If it is old then yeast won't expand and bread won't turn out the way it should.
Add water as needed, add little by little until everything is combined and is not sticky. If required, you can add more flour too. You can adjust water & flour quantity as per needed.
Instant Pot: Before adding dough to Instant Pot, spread oil all around the inner pot - otherwise the dough will stick.
I have made 6 balls using 3 cups of flour, you can adjust the ingredients as per need. After making balls from dough, cover with damp cloth and keep at warm place till oven get preheated.
Milk: Before putting prepared dough balls in the oven, I add milk. Adding milk helps in giving nice color to Bread Bowl.
After putting in the oven, I also spread water on the top of balls using pastry brush. This is to make sure the bread does not get too dry or it will break. The water also makes it soft throughout. If you want more dark color of bread, you can also broil for 2 minutes.
Serve by adding soup/chili in Bread Bowl.
